ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act is a Federal law which was adopted in 1990.  The Law prohibits discrimination against disabled individuals in employment and in providing access to facilities and services.  The Act became effective with regard to municipalities on January 26, 1992.  This Act will have a significant impact on the City of Portage in that the City has already begun appropriate action to insure compliance with the Act.

It is the policy of the City of Portage to not exclude qualified individuals with disabilities from participation in or benefiting from the services, programs, or activities of the City.  Further, it is the policy of the City of Portage not to discriminate against a qualified individual with a disability in its job application procedures; the hiring, advancements or discharge of employees; employee compensation; job training and other terms, conditions and privileges of employment.  It is the intention of the City of Portage to comply with all applicable requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Members of the public, including individuals with disabilities and groups representing individuals with disabilities, are encouraged to submit suggestions to City officials on how the City might better meet the needs of individuals with disabilities pursuant to its stated policy.

Any individual who believes he or she has received treatment inconsistent with the policies set forth above or any other requirement of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) (click here to visit ADA website) should read the City's ADA Compliance Policy (see below) .
