Emergency Management

The City of Portage currently maintains a documented Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan.  The Plan includes information for city departments to operate before, during and after a major natural or man-made emergency event.  The City of Portage Emergency Management also communicates and works with Porter County Emergency Management, linking the City of Portage with Indiana State Emergency Management, and Federal Emergency Management.

The City of Portage Emergency Management also participates at the Porter County Level in Local Emergency Planning Committee, and the Emergency Management Advisory Council.

For more general information concerning natural threats please visit our Documents Page and view News & Notices. And also visit the Related Links Page for more Emergency Management Web Sites.

The City of Portage is very aware of the changing weather in Northwest Indiana. We are committed to the safety of our citizens and visitors to Portage. We have an extensive Outdoor Early Warning System comprised of 7 sirens, along with 25 additional sirens located throughout Porter County. This makes a total of 32 Early Warning Sirens that cover our county.  The county wide system is tested at 11:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month, unless there is inclement weather in the area during the the scheduled test time.  The test will consist of the siren activation lasting one (1) minute followed by one (1) minute of silences, and repeating one (1) minute of of activation. There is no need for any response by the public.

During an actual activation for any emergency the sirens will be activated for duration of three (3) minutes.  At this time the Emergency Activation System (EAS) will be activated which allows the media outlets to advise the public of what the situation is and the actions citizens need to take. During an emergency activation citizens should immediately seek shelter in a safe location and tune to your local radio/TV stations for further information and or directions.    The general public is advised to not call their local Emergency Dispatch Center, Police, or Fire Departments for information, but again seek immediate shelter and tune to their local radio/TV for information.
