The Records Department is under the direction of Chief Clerk Barb Vaughan.
The Records Department is responsible for organizing and securing all police records that are processed through the police department. They do this by utilizing the computer records management system. Requests for police reports can be done at the police department or by calling 762-3122.
Records Department business hours are:
Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m
Saturday & Sunday 8 a.m to 4 p.m.
(closed on Holidays)
ACCIDENT REPORTS can be picked up 3 business days after the accident at a cost of $10.00. Exact change or check made payable to the "City of Portage" is required with a drivers license. They can be picked up during business hours or you can mail in a request with a check or money order payable to the City of Portage and enclose a self addressed stamped envelope.
Accident Reconstruction Reports are $500.00.
VIN CHECKS cost $5.00 (exact change or check made payable to the "City of Portage" with a drivers license) and can be completed during business hours only. Preferably during day light hours.
REPORTS:
Reports cost $10.00 (up to 4 pages then $.10 per page)
MISCELLANEOUS:
Background checks cost $10.00
Vehicle Impound Release forms cost $20.00
Fingerprinting:
$15.00 for city residents,
$10.00 for non-city residents,
and is free of charge for government agencies, children 17 yrs of age & younger, and for
firearms applicants.

Processing:

After 48 business hours, come to the Portage Police Department to process your application.
- You must present some form of picture identification such as a valid driver's license or state identification card showing your residency within the City of Portage.

Pay the City of Portage fee via money order or cash (exact change).

Fingerprinting for firearms applications are done free of charge.

You will then be responsible to mail your own application, State money order, and fingerprint card to the State of Indiana Firearms Division. (address will be on the application when printed off for you).
