Iron Horse Trail

The Iron Horse Heritage Trail is a second greenway corridor which runs east-west through the City of Portage connecting two major Parks;  Woodland Park and Imagination Glen Park.  Like the Prairie Duneland Trail, this trail is being developed as a recreational trail.  This corridor spans the entire length of the city.

Phase I of the project was completed in 2008 and includes the paved segment of the corridor that begins within Imagination Glen Park East (where the Iron Horse connects with the prairie Duneland Trail) off of State Road 149 and ends at Hamstrom Road for a total length of 2.17 miles.  A unique feature of this trail is the dual surfacng which provides a hard asphalt surface as well as a softer limestone surface for joggers.

Future plans include the trail connecting with a third trail which leads to the City's new downtown development along Central Avenue.  Subsequent phases of Iron Horse Heritage Trail development will bring trail users to Woodland Park and points further west of the downtown area. In time, the trail will be routed to our new Lakefront & Riverwalk.
Trail visitors can currently park at either Imagination Glen Park off of McCool Rd. or the BMX track off of Hwy 149 to utilize this paved trail for walking, jogging, sight-seeing, cross-country skiing, and nature studies.
