City of Portage, Indiana

The lack of natural parks in Portage has come to an end with the addition of Deer Trail Park. This property, located near the Ameriplex development provides many recreational activities including trails for hiking, walking, cross country skiing and fishing access to the Little Calumet River.  After an extensive restoration of the property that included that removal of invasive plant species and various debris, Deer Trail Park opened to the public in 2007.  The old north Samuelson Road, which has long been abandoned, can still be viewed on the property while the historic bridge spands the Calumet River.
