Recycling and Trash Collection

Recycling

Hazardous Waste Collection
The City of Portage does not accept hazardous materials in trash or recycling. However, the Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District offers annual hazardous material collection events at Portage High School and regular disposal at their facilities.

Trash Collection

  • On your scheduled residential trash collection day, place your totes at the road side by 6:00am. Tote carts must be three feet apart and the directional arrow should point toward the street.
  • Do not place trash bags on top of the toter.
  • Avoid placing your toters within three feet of any objects, including vehicles and mail boxes.
  • Do not lean items against the toter. This will interfere with our automated system.
  • Electronic waste must be placed at the curbside as a bulk item the first week of each calendar month on your regular collection day.

Frequently Asked Questions

I don't have a recycling toter. How do I get one?
One recycling Toter is provided per household. Contact the Portage Street Department and they will make arrangements for you to receive them. Homeowners may request an additional recycling toter at no cost. Additional trash toters cost $6.00 per toter per month. See the online form above or call the Street Department.

How much does it cost to join the recycling program?
Recycling is a free service provided to the residents.

What do I do with my electronic waste?
E-waste must be placed at the curbside as a bulk item on the first week of each calendar month on your regular trash day. Includes all electronics.

Why didn't the garbage man take my paint?
The state of Indiana classifies wet paint as a hazardous material and unsafe for regular landfill placement. Sanitation will take your paint if it is completely dry (some people mix it with kitty litter).

What materials are not allowed in the trash?
Other materials that cannot be taken include hazardous materials such as gasoline, oil, solvents, paint thinners, antifreeze, pool chemicals, acids and pesticides, live ammunition, accelerants, combustible or caustic materials. For questions call the Street Department.
